Collectible Peanut Butter Glass Soars At Brindle Auction

May 5, 2016

Brindle Auctioneering in rural Willow Hill, Franklin County, Pa., held a successful sale of collectible glass consisting mostly of peanut butter glasses and various tumblers on March 19. It was a 424-lot sale and 77 individual glasses sold for $50 or more. Of those, 16 sold between $100 and $200 and 13 sold for over $200. One highlight was a boxed set of Libbey Glass dogs which went for $310.
Among the peanut butter glasses, a unique orchid sold for $800; a daffodil, $675; a yellow perch/crappie fish, $650; and a chihuahua dog sold for $350. A Santa juice glass sold for $320, a red clematis, $310; a fancy blue columbine, $230; a “no name” iris, $220; a kingfisher bird, $220; and a darkened dianthus pink glass sold for $210.
The collection belonged to author John Carpenter. An authority on the subject, Carpenter self-published both a soft and hard-bound reference book titled “Peanut Butter Glasses And More” in 2014 along with co-author David Grayson.
The definitive go-to book for all things Peanut Butter glass, this work features 1,400 color photos. The main emphasis of the book are Boscal peanut butter glasses.
Including glasses and tumblers, “Peanut Butter Glass” was not all used to hold peanut butter. It is a field of collecting that has captivated generations who enjoy 20th century glass. Some were originally sold in boxed sets, some individually. There is a tremendous number of variates when it comes to color, name, and design. A longtime favorite category for many collectors are flowers, and rare variations have a strong market. Examples of the thistle have sold recently at public auction for $3,800 and $3,700. The overall marketplace for this collectable field is alive and well.
