You don’t have to have a garden to appreciate their beauty. Vincent van Gogh never owned a garden, but throughout his life he painted and drew outdoor spaces and natural objects frequently.
During his short (ten-year) career, Vincent (as he signed many of the pieces) produced more than 2,000 works of art, including a significant number featuring gardens and parks – over 90 paintings and nearly 60 drawings, as well as numerous sketches in his remarkable letters to his brother, Theo.
In this handsomely-designed book, Ralph Skea surveys the gardens that were most dear to van Gogh – from the domestic havens of parsonage gardens in the Netherlands, and the romance of Parisian city parks, to the blazing flower beds of Provence. Van Gogh’s drawings and paintings on garden themes are less well known than his landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, but by studying his garden works it’s possible to gain new insights into his achievements as a draughtsman and as a painter. Vincent’s Gardens is a perfect addition to any art and/or garden lover’s library!
