Expansive Indian Artifact Collection To Be Sold In Mechanicsburg, Pa., On May 13

May 2, 2017

Elmer Murry Auctions Inc., on behalf of the Mechanicsburg Museum Association of Mechanicsburg, Pa., will hold a pubic auction of Indian artifacts on Saturday, May 13. The auction will take place at the Mechanicsburg Museum Association, located at Market and Allen Street, in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and will start at 9 a.m.
Richard Murry, auctioneer, will offer more than 500 items from a diversified collection of artifacts gathered by James Young during the 1950s and earlier. The items include boxes of points, banner stones, plummets, and pottery vessels, among other things.
Young (1887-1955) was a Mechanicsburg resident for most of his life. He lived and practiced law in the community, and in his free time assembled this vast grouping. At the time of his death, he bequeathed the collection to the borough of Mechanicsburg. In 1987, the collection was donated to the Mechanicsburg Museum Association. Items have been examined and verified by archaeologist and author Barry Kent. After 60-plus years, this material has been unpacked and prepared for dispersal in order to raise funds for museum projects.
The proceeds of this auction will be designated for the creation of the Frankenberger Tavern and Garden Project. The Frankenberger Tavern is located on East Main Street in Mechanicsburg.
