From "Raw" To "Riches"

Embassy Sells Comic Collection

February 5, 2021

Embassy Auctions International’s Jan. 21 sale was eagerly anticipated by both live and online bidders. Prior to the sale, Embassy staff carefully selected the finest books of a fresh-to-the-market comic collection, originally consigned “raw” (ungraded), and sent them to be graded by Comic Book Certification Service (CBCS). At the sale, the action started off with a “raw” copy of Venom #1 that went for $48, but you could feel the excitement building as progressively higher demand books such as Batman Adventures #12, the first appearance of Harley Quinn, started to cross the block. Auctioneer Katelyn Callahan sold the CBCS-graded 9.8 with white pages for an impressive $1,936 to an internet buyer.
Other lower graded copies sold in the $400 to $800 range, which demonstrates how much overall strength there is in the marketplace. Comics in general sold well across all titles, both DC and Marvel; however, horror titles and Amazing Spiderman were in high demand. With so much variety and first issue comics selling at the same sale, buyers were happy to obtain some seldom seen issues.
A follow-up auction is scheduled for May with additional graded comics, including Secret Wars #8 graded 9.8 and Weird War #1, as well as other graded copies of Batman Adventures #12 as high as 9.8.
