Hurley Holds Fifth And Final Sale On Behalf Of Chester Wayne Miller Estate

Johannes Spitler Chest And Civil War Material Highlight Vast Collection

February 8, 2019

An old, relatively unknown collection surfaced at Hurley Auctions, of Greencastle, Pa., which belonged to the late Chester Wayne Miller of Boonsboro, Md. Hurley held multiple sales to settle the estate, given the enmorous quantity of things. The fifth and final one was an online-only auction, which ended Jan. 19, encompassing extensive Civil War and other militaria material.
The star of the final sale was undoubtedly a rare Johannes Spitler paint-decorated blanket chest with stylized birds and floral designs. Bidders traveled from near and far to view this rarity (discovered in Miller’s mobile home), which closed at a final selling price of $40,962.50. The buyer, Rod Graves of Luray, Va., intends to have the chest restored (it is missing one rear foot) and plans to display it in the Luray Valley Museum. The museum’s mission is to chronicle the history of the Shenandoah Valley and is located at Luray Caverns, which hosts half a million visitors yearly.
Other auction highlights included a Confederate "Dog River" style cavalry saber, which closed at $3,226. A partial North Carolina belt buckle sold for $10,283; a 54 cal. Harpers Ferry 1816 rifle, $1,808; a Virginia manufacture second model sword, $1,782; an 1840 model heavy cavalry saber with scabbard, $1,638; and a Virginia manufacture saber with scabbard second model, $4,181. A Confederate ramrod realized $1,412; a set of three Mississippi infantry buttons, $542; an OVM dug belt buckle sold for $1,864; and a hand-carved folk art cane went for $576.
“We had a record 208,000 page views on the site and bidders from 24 states,” stated Hurley Auctions general manager Michael Michalsky. "We couldn’t have been happier with the results. The wintry mix of bad weather was definitely a concern, but I was glad to see our bidders made it through bidding online from their homes.”
