Linda And Dennis Moyer Estate Sale Slated For July 10 And 11 At Pook & Pook

Rare Simmons Bird Tree To Lead Sale As Lot #1 On Day One

July 6, 2020

Pook & Pook has had the privilege of hosting a multitude of estate sales, and on Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, the Downingtown, Pa., auction house has the truly humbling honor of presenting the esteemed collection of Linda and Dennis Moyer. A great regional collection, this sale is gearing up to stand out with a dazzling selection of American antiques. The Moyers lived in Zionsville, Lehigh County, Pa., and loved Pennsylvania German decorative arts.
Buyers are in for a rare treat as hundreds of select items from the couple will find new homes and collections in which to shine. This two-day sale, like the many quilts in the Moyers’ collection, is a beautiful patchwork of Pennsylvania history. With a focus on provenance, the Moyers curated a definitive collection.
The exquisite Schtockschnitzler Simmons carved bird tree (est. $20,000-$40,000) featured in Dick and Rosemarie Machmer’s “Just for Nice” descended through the family of Amos Kline until bought privately by Dennis Moyer in the 1960s. Also featured is an impressive carved eagle ornament (est. $10,000-$15,000) that used to adorn the Eagle Moving and Storage Company in Philadelphia. Other incredible items include a paint-decorated poplar Berks County dower chest, dated 1835 (est. $3,000-$4,000), which is pictured on the cover of the “Colors of Goschenhoppen,” and a painted cherry and walnut folk art dresser from Berks County (est. $2,000-3,000) that has the prized provenance of being the first item bought by Dennis Moyer for his collection. An authority on fraktur, Dennis’ collection features unique examples of the art like a Man in the Moon fraktur birth certificate and a breathtaking watercolor and cutwork fraktur scherenschnitte (est. $1,500-$2,500).
The auction will include such a wide array of items that buyers may find themselves overwhelmed. With more carved canes than you can shake a stick at and as many corner cupboards as their house had corners, the Moyer collection is a must-see. The single collection estate sale will feature many tall case clocks, like an expertly inlaid Pennsylvania Chippendale tall case clock made from walnut, dated 1779 (est. $2,000-3,000), and impressive painted furniture such as a very fine Pennsylvania poplar Dutch cupboard, retaining its original red and black decoration (est. $8,000-12,000).
From fraktur to weathervanes, butterprints to gameboards, redware and mocha to trade signs and printed Bibles, and homespun and coverlets, this sale simply contains far too much variety and scope than can be adequately explained here and, therefore, must be experienced.
