Locati Sells Meerschaum Pipe Collection
Over 5,000 Bidders From 70 Countries Registered For Auction
The subjects in the sale included animals, mythological figures, military, among others. Some of the pipes sold were included in the book, Collecting Meerschaum Pipes, and shown at the Brandywine River Museum and also in the 1990 exhibit, Meerschaum Masterpieces, The Premiere Art of Pipes, held at the now defunct Museum of Tobacco Art and History in Nashville, Tenn. This collection included some of the best examples to come to market in recent history and represented the golden era of Meerschaum pipe art, which took place in the second half of the 19th century. They were carved from the mineral sepiolite in Europe. The material was conducive for smoking pipes.
"We love presenting small, specialized sales like this," said Michael Locati, co-owner of Locati LLC. "The online format was perfect for this type of collection, and we had over 5,000 registered bidders from over 70 countries."
Among the highlights were a large Meerschaum pipe featuring a woman with a dog and birdcage selling for $1,100. One featuring a Native American chief also brought $1,100, and an example depicting monumental Classical figures realized $4,600.
