Obituary: Walter Luke Gottshall (1921-2018)

July 6, 2018

Walter Luke Gottshall (b. 1921) of Reinholds, Pa., passed away on July 1, peacefully surrounded by family at the Wyomissing Rehab and Nursing Home, near where he and his surviving wife, June E. Gottshall, were married and raised their three children in West Reading. Gottshall was a member of Swamp Lutheran Church between Blainsport and Reinholds.
A World War II veteran, Lions Club International member, and Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen member, Gottshall was the son of Luke and Fanny Gottshall and nephew of Hattie Klapp Brunner. Gottshall inherited his fatherÂ’s folk art talents and was a folk carver for roughly the past five decades. His wife, June, painted his wooden creations. The two displayed their work at traditional folk art craft shows.
GottshallÂ’s daughter, folk painter Barbara Strawser of Schaefferstown, Pa., continues the family tradition of Pennsylvania German arts.
