More than 1,000 pieces of original works from the archives of the Franklin Mint Gallery of American Art will be offered. This sale is a single consignor auction, and all lots will be sold, without reserve. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime sale with original paintings, illustrations, founders’ copies and prints. Many pieces were used in production of the Franklin Library, with items including coins and medallions, porcelain collectors’ plates, dolls and lithographs. The auction will start at 2 p.m. Previews will be Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, March 24, 25 and 26, from noon to 5 p.m., as well as from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the day of the sale. Absentee and phone bids are currently being accepted, and live online bidding will be available on www.liveauctioneers.com and www.invaluable.com.
Headlining are seven of the eight original paintings, created for the Franklin Mint series “America the Beautiful.” Artists were chosen and given specific lines from the patriotic anthem to be rendered in art form. They consist of “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies” by Wilson Hurley, “For Amber Waves of Grain” by Ray Hosford, “For Purple Mountain Majesties” by Hall Diteman, “Above the Fruited Plains” (is missing), “America, America” by James Fetherolf, “God Shed His Grace on Thee” by Dean Fausett, “And Crown Thy Good With Brotherhood” by Robert Sticker and “From Sea to Shining Sea” by Alexander Dzigurski.
Following this series is work from many other distinguished artists. Greg Hildebrandt was commissioned by the Franklin Mint for the sum of $35,000 to design his interpretation of “Queen Galadriel” from JRR Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” This acrylic-on-board is the image used for the design of the collector’s doll. Other lots include two oil paintings of horses in full stride by Chuck DeHann, “The Untamed” and “Fury.” For Native American art collectors, this auction includes four Paul Calle original oil paintings of Indian chiefs and five Bart Forbes watercolor illustrations created for the Franklin Library book “House Made of Dawn.” A dramatic maritime battle scene painting by Derek George Montague Gardner, a distinguished member of the (RSMA) Royal Society of Marine Artists, featured is his depiction of the 32 gun French frigate "Belle Poule" opening fire against the British frigate "Arethusa.”
From the Franklin Library’s “The Old Man and the Sea,” Wilson’s will be offering seven original Daniel Schwartz illustrations. Also offered in the sale are 33 Jerry Pinkney illustrations.
An abundance of original works by notable artists also include 23 Mitchel Hooks illustrations for Franklin Mint books, “The Optimist's Daughter,” “Great Cases of Sherlock Holmes,” “A Game Men Play” and “The Stories of John Cheever.” Other artists whose work is included are Milt Kobayashi, Gonzalo Fonseca, Robert McGinnis, Charles Reid, Ben Wohlberg, Hodges Soileau, Thomas B. Allen, David Johnston, Uldis Klavins, Hal Ashmead, Dennis Luzak, Henry M. Brock, Herbert Tauss, George H. Jones, Ben Stahl, John Berkey and many more.
