Walter Steely Furniture Shines At Witman Auction

Witman Auctioneers Inc. of Manheim, Pa., conducted a public auction on Feb. 7 at Enck's Banquet and Conference Center for the Milton Hartzell estate of Wyomissing, Pa., among others.
Some of the items sold were a pair of Walter Steely Windsor arm chairs for $5,280 and a Walter Steely tavern table for $2,860.
Steely of Lititz, Lancaster County, Pa., was a skilled 20th-century cabinetmaker who reproduced period furniture in the same vein as Wallace Nutting. His work has long been collectible in the Lancaster County region and continues to possess a strong market.
An Astor's barrel organ sold for $2,860; a two-part Dutch cupboard, $1,650; a Kindle highboy chest, $1,100; a step-back display cabinet, $1,018; and a Willard style tall case clock sold for $990. A period Hepplewhite bow front chest sold for $880; a harvest drop-leaf table, $715; a high wheeled baby coach, $660; and a slag glass table lamp brought $605.
A folk art Santa Claus with sleigh carving sold for $495; a Gibson Amplifier, $412; a Sterling covered vegetable bowl, $330; an amber bitters bottle, $330; and a Doug Shaw bird tree sold for $275.
