A 1960-61 San Francisco 49ers Jumbo Bobblehead Doll Brings $19,800
Huggins & Scott Sold Unusual 15-Inch Promotional Version
April 02, 2021
A scarce 1960-61 San Francisco 49ers jumbo (15 inches tall) bobblehead doll sold March 11 for $19,800 at Huggins & Scott Auctions. A descendant of the Japanese family that co-owned the distributor, Otagiri Mercantile Company, consigned the bobblehead. Otagiri was headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., and was a stoneware manufacturing company of ceramics in Japan beginning production in the 1950s. Chiyoko and Goro Otagiri established the Otagiri Mercantile Company after their return to Japan in 1947, following their release from the Topaz internment camp in Utah. Otagiri evidently produced five or fewer jumbos for each of the 14 NFL teams. Condition of the bright, bold beauty would be near mint except for some cracking on the left shoes side and bottom. There are intact original decals of NFL (shoe), Japan (underside) and FORTY NINERS (chest). About twice the height of standard nodders, jumbos are more susceptible to the general wear and tear that come from practical usage and long-term storage. Bidding opened at $2,500.
