Alice In Wonderland Collection Includes Illustrations, Books, Sketches, Toys, Posters, And Art

Group Outlines Lewis Carroll's Legacy, Books And Characters

November 17, 2023

Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce a 272-lot live sale to be held on Nov. 30 and also streamed on the companys website at www.potterauctions.com. The sale is highlighted by a collection of Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832-98) books and artwork. Carrol is most famous for Alice in Wonderland, and the top expected lot is a signed, first authorized and first published English edition of Alices Adventures in Wonderland. This example was published in London by Macmillan and Co. in 1865 but dated 1866 for the Christmas market. It features 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. For this edition, the book was re-set by the printer from a copy of the suppressed 1865 Alice, forming the basis for all future Macmillan editions. The presentation copy is inscribed by the author to Richard Doyle (1824-83) on the half-title using his real name. This was rare as Dodgson was careful to protect his privacy and to prevent his serious mathematical works from being linked with his childrens books. This lot also includes a first edition, first state of Carrolls Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. It was published in London by Macmillan and Co. in 1871 but dated 1872. It includes illustrations by John Tenniel and a publishers ad for Dodgsons works on the frontispiece. Lot #3 is a first authorized edition and first published English edition of Carrolls Alices Adventures in Wonderland. It was published in London by Macmillan and Co. in 1865 but dated 1866. This presentation copy, inscribed by the illustrator John Tenniel, includes an original drawing on the half-title of the Mad Hatter with a tea cup and toast. It is signed, With monogram JTs kind regards / Xmas 1867. This is one of only five known copies of drawings made by Tenniel as part of inscriptions in books, according to Schillers 1990 census. Illustrator Salvador Dalis (1904-89) and Carrolls Alices Adventures in Wonderland is a limited edition, number 324 of 2,500 copy signed by Dali, and printed in New York by the Maecenas Press - Random House in 1969. This large folio includes a colored and etched frontispiece and 12 color heliogravures with original remarques by Dali, each within 17 unbound and unstitched loose as issued gatherings. The Farbers were truly mad as a hatter when it came to collecting all things Alice. One focus of their collection were the hundreds of various illustrators that, since 1865, have been producing unique renditions of the characters and scenes from this popular childrens book. The Farbers also had a deep fascination for the many translations of the work, chief among them perhaps the most important, the original Alices copy of Nabokovs Russian translation of Alice. We are excited to jump down this rabbit hole on Nov. 30, according to Chris Brink, director of Fine Books and Manuscripts at Potter & Potter Auctions.
