April 03, 2026
Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of this 411-lot sale held on Feb. 19. All prices noted include the auction houses 20 percent buyers premium. The top lot was a deck of James Y. Humphreys Seminole Wars playing cards selling for $7,800. These were printed in Philadelphia around 1819. The courts were engraved, hand colored, full-length portraits, with the Jacks as Indian chiefs, the Queens as classical goddesses, and the Kings as American presidents. The decks card backs were decorated with dots and asterisks. Life magazine featured this deck on the cover of its May 30, 1955, issue, and a copy of that publication was included with the lot. A brick (12 pack) of Jerrys Nugget playing cards sold for $5,520. These 1980s-era poker sized, cellophane wrapped decks included six blue and six red backs and were sold with their original white carton. A pack of Martin Dupont Belgian tarot cards landed at $4,320. This 18th-century block-and-stencil printed pack was lettered on the four of coins I.G.; their backs were decorated with small suns within diamonds. A deck of Marseilles tarot cards traded hands at $3,360. This 78-card deck from the 19th century was block-printed with stencil coloring and housed in a later dark green buckram box. Another interesting lot were three antique Parker Bros. war games, which realized $4,080. These were produced in Salem, Mass., in the late 19th/early 20th century and included The War in Cuba (1898), The Battle of Manila (1898), and Fighting with the Boers (1920). Each retained its original box featuring chromolithographed covers. The trio were from the Curtis Wilson Games Collection. We were impressed with the high level of interest and bidding throughout the auction. The top lot was a deck of cards we had seen only once before, and collectors clearly noted it and other quality lots, according to Joe Slabaugh, Potter & Potter Auctions director of cataloging.
