On Friday, Dec. 3, Pook & Pook with Noel Barrett will team up yet again to give collectors of quality toys, board games and dolls from the 18th, 19th and 20th century as well as all manner of unusual objects including advertising signs, salesmen samples, unique models, coin-operated devices, and early store fixtures a chance to take home items from yet another signature assemblage of vintage playthings. Over 400 lots from several key collections are set to cross the auction block starting at 9 a.m. On April 23, Pook and Barrett sold part one of the Bud and Judy Newman collection of games and toys. More than 300 board games, puzzles, and toys in all crossed the block, along with an incredible selection of fine art and folk art. This go around brings bidders more than 250 lots, many with multiple games in a lot. This second offering, just as the first, offers up an amazing variety of colorful lithographed games and puzzles. Buddy was an omnivorous collector; if it was a great game, he often couldnt resist buying a second. There are a number of duplicates in this offering, including some of the real stars of the last sale, among them a McLoughlin The Worlds Game of Baseball, which hammered down for $15,000 in Aprils first session of the collection. Adding to the Newman pieces will be a select group of games from the late Steve Olins collection. His games went to auction in 2008, but his wife, Dianne, kept some of their favorites. Included this time are some scarce lithographed paper-on-wood toys and a significant group of the colorful and rare English folding paper-on-linen games from the early 1800s. Another grouping of toys from the Bill and Stevie Weart collection will be on offer. Known primarily for cast-iron toys, Stevies consignments include an Orkin Cabin Cruiser in amazing condition as well as and an all original example of the much sought after Lionel standard gauge Blue Comet. This 400-plus lot sale includes a variety of items from collectors throughout the United States as well as long-held family treasures and recently found pieces as well. A highlight in this category, found in an attic in Denver, Co., is an amazing baseball toy, denoted The Champion Base Ball Catcher in the 1893 Ives, Blakeslee &, Williams catalog. Polling a number of toy collectors, we have found no one who has seen this action toy before. It could be the only known example and should certainly be an all-star in the world of baseball games.
