Haars Auction in Dillsburg, Pa., conducts live sales every Monday evening with 200 to 300 people in regular attendance. At their April 25 auction, they sold a Garod Art Deco radio from the 1940s for $1,500. The Garod Radio Corporation of Brooklyn, N.Y., made numerous radios during the 1940s. Among them were four Catalin models that are highly regarded today. The model sold was the bright red and yellow Catalin 6AU-1 Commander. The sleek, yet boxy Art Deco radio has a streamlined design emphasized with the less often seen wrap-around grille. Roughly during the same era Garod was producing radios, Vance Haar began auctioneering at his facility along Route 15 in Dillsburg next to Haars Drive-In theater. Today, the operation is run by the third generation. To learn more, email Vickie Hardy at VickieHardy@msn.com. For additional information, visit www.haars.com.
