Crumpton Goes Online

June 5, 2020

Dixon’s Furniture Auction in Crumpton, Md., better known as simply “Crumpton” or to locals as “the sale barn,” is the latest among many businesses to adapt and take advantage of online opportunities necessitated due to social distancing and crowd size requirements.
Founded in 1961, Crumpton has had to change over the years, yet mostly resembled its original self immediately prior to the current pandemic. Sales were held every Wednesday with the exception of a few holidays. The company specializes in low fees, no frills, and high volume. There is no moving or transportation department. Consignors bring their merchandise to the sale barn, set it up themselves, and auctioneers move swiftly via golf carts and mobile podiums through 2,000 to 3,000 lots every week. It is a regional institution, such as Brimfield.
The closure of Crumpton reflected the national debate on balancing public health and economic security. On May 13, Governor Hogan announced that the State of Maryland would move to Stage One of a re-opening plan, and owner Dylan Dixon saw an opportunity.
“This is an exciting time for Crumpton, as we move forward using technology to drive our vision. We can use this technology to bring together our sellers and estate liquidators by providing them a way to continue liquidating a large volume of merchandise. Making these changes has also allowed us to meet the needs of our current buyers and has expanded our local community’s ability to participate in the Crumpton experience. These changes are providing a more flexible experience for everyone,” said Dixon.
Crumpton’s first auction back closed on May 20 and was led by a Ward Brothers Brandt decoy bringing $2,600. As a goodwill gesture to both consignors and bidders willing to try out the new changes, there was a 0-percent buyer’s premium and seller’s commission. Their second online-only auction featured over 900 lots ranging from chainsaws to country Americana. It went live May 30, and lots started to close at 10 a.m. on June 3.
