Embassy Sells 1920s Cast-Iron Mr. Peanut Figure For $9,500

A ca. 1920s cast-iron figure of Mr. Peanut took top honors at Embassy Auctions International's June 29 sale. Embassy is based in Kinzers, Pa. The Mr. Peanut statue (the famous face of Planters Peanuts) was 40.5 inches tall and had minor wear to painted surface. It was considered a rare example of early advertising from the iconic and collectible brand. Other highlights from the diverse sale included an antique, ca. 1880 Louis Vuitton Rayee steamer trunk bringing $3,800. The french luggage comprised striped Rayee canvas and original brass hardware with two brass locks, handles, and brass corners. The interior was lined and featured the LV logo and mark with red, white, and blue accents. A 19th-century KPM porcelain plaque titled "Pandora" painted by Charles-Amable Lenoir (1860-1926), measuring 13-by-7.75 inches, makers mark on the back of porcelain, sold for $3,750. Prices reported are hammer prices and do not include 22 percent buyer's premium. A 19th-century oil-on-canvas reproduction of George Washington in "The Lansdowne Portrait," the famous Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) painting, the back reading, "Painted by my Brother George H. Woolsey and sent to his Grandfather Joseph Howland from England - EJW '45," in a gilt frame, sold for $2,500. A late 19th-century French Depose Tete Jumeau bisque head doll with jointed composition body, 16 inches tall, the back of the head bearing the red stamp of the maker, realized $2,100. A Victorian-era European miniature bisque doll family of three, all bisque with jointed bodies, glass eyes, and painted facial features, brought $1,500. Something you don't commonly see sold, a Minelab Excalibur II Universal underwater metal detector still in the box went for $700. An antique Victorian-era William L.
