By Cynthia Beech Lawrence - March 18, 2022
An Online Only Decorative Arts Auction at Pook & Pook will be held Thursday, March 24. This impressive grouping of 800 lots are anchored by three extensive collections. Spring is just around the corner, and the Pook & Pook gallery has become a stop for migratory game birds on the Atlantic flyway. There will be a single-owner group of 122 lots of duck and goose decoys from a longtime New Jersey collector. There is a heavy focus on New Jersey birds, to include makers Lloyd Parker, William Cranmer, and Hurley Conklin, as well as Chesapeake Bay birds and makers. The colors of spring are also represented by 65 lots from a private Chinese collector. Porcelain from this collection ranges from plum blossom ginger jars to blue ground and turquoise ground vases, with a garden of Mandarin, flamb, peach bloom, and famille noir porcelain vases, jardinires, plates, and bowls. Gilt bronze Buddhas, bronze pricket sticks, and archaic Japanese bronzes are accompanied by carved, painted, and gilt wood Buddhas, carved stone figures, scrolls and snuff bottles. There will also be 130 lots from an extensive collection of fine sterling silver from the 18th to 20th centuries with items from America, England, France, Ireland, Russia, Denmark and India. Makers will include Cartier, Tiffany, Gorham, Georg Jensen, Bailey & Co., Udall & Ballon, Blair & Crawford, Bigelow Kennard, Eley & Fearn, Matthew West, and Robert Hennell, to name a few. New York and Philadelphia coin silver along with Russian niello silver round out the collection. Furniture highlights include a Mahantongo Valley, Pa., painted dower chest, dated 1821, and a late 19th century painted hanging spool rack, as well as an English Adams style painted side chair and arm chair, ca. 1790. Several oak display and countertop showcases on offer are perfect to show off new purchases. Many other items of interest include 19th-century American landscapes and British sporting art. Contemporary folk art objects include Jonathan Bastian bird trees and other carvings and Dave Gottshall reverse paintings on glass. Breininger Pottery redware and Left Handed Russell Henry stoneware will be available. Embroideries, English needleworks, American 19th century samplers, and carpets are some of the textiles on offer. A public preview will take place on Monday and Tuesday, March 21 and 22. For more information, call 610-269-4040 or visit www.pookandpook.com.
