Books And Manuscripts Sale Realizes Nearly $325,000

Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of a 498-lot books and manuscripts sale held on May 14. All prices reported include the companys 20 percent buyers premium. The top lot and possibly the earliest known letter by Hemingway delivered $14,400. This note from Windemere in Walloon Lake, Mich., was written in pencil when he was 8. It was addressed Dear papa and signed on verso Ernest Heming/way. It reads, Dear papa. I saw a mother duck with seven little babies. how big is my corn? / Ursula saw them first we went strawberry picking and got enough to make three short-cakes. Ernest Heming/way. This is the first listed item in Spanier & Trogdons 2011 Letters of Ernest Hemingway. Ernest Hemingways The Torrents of Spring: A Romantic Novel in Honor of the Passing of a Great Race traded hands at $6,000. This first edition in the rare first-issue jacket of Hemingways first novel was published in New York by Charles Scribners Sons in 1926. It was printed in an edition of only 1,250 copies. Hemingway blamed the publishers poor promotion and use of blurbs by more famous writers for the books lack of commercial success. Hemingways Green Hills of Africa realized $5,760. This first edition, first printing features decorations by Edward Shenton. It was published in New York by Charles Scribners Sons in 1935 and retained its original publishers unclipped ($2.75) dust jacket. A first edition of J.D. Salingers (1919-2010) The Catcher in the Rye sold for $11,400. This fine-condition edition of Salingers landmark coming-of-age novel was published in Boston by Little, Brown and Company in 1951. It featured its original mixed early issue dust jacket, with its details indicating an early issue. We had a great day at auction.
