Books And Paper Treasures Sale Realizes Nearly $713,000

October 16, 2026

Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of a 172-lot specialty Books and Paper auction held on Sept. 10. All sale prices noted include the companys 20 percent buyers premium. An autograph letter signed by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), estimated at $14,000 to $16,000, achieved $18,000. This note was written in late 1882. The recipient, musician and actor Thomas Whiffen (English, 1842-97), was a friend of Wildes. Ernest Hemingways (1899-1961) Three Stories & Ten Poems was estimated at $10,000 to $20,000 and traded hands at $19,200. This first edition of Hemingways first published book was printed in Paris by Contact Publishing Co. in 1923. It was one of only 300 copies printed. It showcased Hemingways minimalist style, exploring themes of disillusionment, war, and life as an American expatriate in France. Clement C. Moores (1779-1863) Poems was estimated at $3,000 to $6,000 and sold for $18,500. It was published in New York by Bartlett & Welford in 1844. This scarce first edition of Moores first book appearance of A Visit From St. Nicholas, published under his name, was a presentation copy. It was inscribed by the author on the half-title: Mrs De Kay with the respects of the author. Mar. 1846. The recipient was Janet Drake de Kay, the daughter of poet Joseph Rodman Drake and the mother of painter Helena de Kay Gilder. Frank Herberts (1920-86) Dune, estimated at $3,000 to $5,000, sold for $10,800. This first edition in its first issue unclipped dust jacket was published in Philadelphia by Chilton Books in 1965. This landmark science fiction novel would go on to become the basis for numerous film and television adaptations. This was one of the most satisfying moments Ive ever had working at an auction house. Potter and Potter was able to acquire superb material and match it to collectors who will truly treasure it. The interest and excitement was clearly reflected in the runaway success of the sale. This sale has set the bar high for us, reported Chad Reingold, Potter & Potter Auctions director of rare books. To learn more, email chad@potterauctions.com.
