Central Pennsylvania Chest Sells For $75,520
By Karl Pass - June 05, 2026
We had three phone lines at the end with aggressive bidding, and it sold to a Pennsylvania collector who asked to remain anonymous, said David Horst of Kleinfelters discussing the paint-decorated lift-top chest selling for $75,520 at his May 16 online sale. The chest originated from the central part of the state, possibly Union or Centre County, and was inscribed in central cartouche John Shneiter (Schneider) and dated 1821. Fresh to the market, the chest had original paint decoration on a salmon ground with flowering branches, birds, corner-heart decoration and three lower drawers on bracket feet. Possibly from the Lewisburg area of what is referred to as the Buffalo Valley, without further research, it is now verified which side of the Susquehanna the chest was made. A chest decorated by the same hand reading Mary Becht is illustrated as figure #178 in Fabians Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest book. Other highlights of the auction included a pair of Texas punch advertising signs selling for $4,425. Prices noted include an 18 percent buyers premium. A rare spatterware spoon holder/rest realized $2,006, and an antique red toleware tray sold for $1,416. For further information, visit www.kleinfelters.com.
