Conestoga Auction Company Sells Jacob Eby Shelf Clock For $30,680
Rare Clock Will Stay Local, Purchased By Manheim Historical Society

The Hess Auction Group held one of its antique specialty auctions on June 18 at its Conestoga Auction Co. facility in Manheim, Pa. Online bidding was available through Live Auctioneers and HiBid. The sale consisted of 545 lots from many consignors, but most came from an estate in Marietta, Pa., Gary Gladfelter of York, Pa., and Sam Stayer (deceased) and Lee Stayer, formerly of Mount Joy, Pa. The items ranged from stoneware, china, artwork, textiles, furniture, and over 40 lots of music boxes, phonographs and related items from Gladfelter. Prices reported include an 18-percent buyers premium. The highest selling lot was a rare Jacob Eby Sheraton mahogany shelf clock, which sold to the Manheim Historical Society for $30,680. Jacob Eby was a well-known clockmaker from Manheim, Pa. A spatterware sugar bowl from the Stayer collection sold for $21,240, going to a private collector. The sugar bowl had red spatter border with green spatter zigzag pattern and red and yellow alternating Christmas Ball pattern. Also from the Stayer collection was a Lancaster County 18th/19th-century ledger book with frakturs that sold for $10,030 and a Lancaster County decorated (show) hand towel dated 1832 and featuring a large peacock, which sold for $5,015. Three items from the Gladfelter collection that were highlights included a three-color spatter Festoon pattern paneled, green, yellow, and red coffee pot with a make-do finial on the lid selling for $10,030; a Regina Sublima 21-inch disc player upright music box, $4,425; and a Klondike Paints tin litho advertising tray, which realized $5,605.
