July 19, 2024
Dana Balsamo of Dana Auctions LLC in Princeton, N.J., is thrilled to announce its upcoming event, the Antique and Vintage Quilt and Textile Auction, scheduled for Saturday, July 20, which will feature over 200 quilts from the Bobbie Aug Quilt Collection. This anticipated auction will showcase a remarkable collection of antique and vintage quilts, tops and other textiles with a special highlight on the works of the esteemed quilt artist, Bobbie Aug. A distinguished figure in the world of quilting, Aug left an indelible mark with her exquisite creations and unwavering dedication to the craft. Born and raised in Peoria, Ill., her passion for quilting was ignited at a young age. Throughout her career, Aug authored several acclaimed books on quilting, including How to Make String Quilts and Vertical Quilts with Style, which have served as invaluable resources for both novice and seasoned quilters alike. Her unique artistic vision, coupled with her mastery of traditional quilting techniques, has garnered widespread admiration and recognition within the quilting community. She was a dedicated quilt historian and co-wrote several books on antique and vintage quilts and textiles, including Antique Quilts & Textiles: A Price Guide to Functional and Fashionable Cloth Comforts, Vintage Quilts: Identifying, Collecting, Dating, Preserving, & Valuing and Calico Man The Manny Kopp Fabric Collection. Auctioneer Balsamo remembers first meeting Aug taking her quilt appraisal class in Paducah, Ky., in 2007. Bobbie was fierce. I was afraid of her! She took no nonsense and was serious about quilt appraisal study. But once she saw that you had the same passion and you were serious about the profession and about quilts, she became a gentle teacher. I remember her fondly, and still have a pair of white gloves she gave me when she discovered I was on the quilt show floor appraising quilts for the first time and forgot my own gloves. Bobbie served on the AQS Quilt Appraisal Certification Committee for many years and was also involved in the early years of the Professional Association of Appraisers for Quilted Textiles. Beyond her contributions to the world of quilting, Augs legacy is deeply intertwined with her family. She was married in 1968 to Noman Aug and moved to Colorado Springs, Co., in 1971. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she has imparted her love for quilting to future generations, fostering a familial bond that is as enduring as the stitches in her quilts. She passed away in January with her family by her side. The auction will offer collectors and enthusiasts a rare opportunity to acquire pieces from Bobbie Augs personal collection and examples by her each imbued with a signature style and craftsmanship. From vibrant patchwork designs to intricate appliqu patterns, these quilts encapsulate the essence of Bobbie Augs artistic genius and serve as a testament to her enduring legacy. Many of the quilts being offered were published in her previous books. Balsamo has been astounded at the variety of vintage double wedding quilts. I have been in the quilt industry for 30 years, and Bobbie had Double Wedding Ring quilts in her collection like none I have ever seen. Different color combinations, construction techniques, and other interesting variations. It has given me a new appreciation for this common Depression Era pattern. Bobbie had an eye! And we are honored to present Bobbie Augs collection at our upcoming auction. Her contributions to quilt history and the quilting community are truly extraordinary, and we are privileged to celebrate her remarkable talent and legacy.
