Potter & Potter Auctions held a 704-lot books and manuscripts sale on July 9. All prices noted include the auction houses 20 percent buyers premium. The top lot was a sammelband of eight 19th-century booklets about Bunker Hill. Estimated at $300 to $500, it made $11,400. The various compiled histories dated from 1819-75. A sammelband is a gathered bound volume which contains separate works. Pope Gregory Is (540-604) Moralia sive exposito in Job was estimated at $3,500 to $6,500 and delivered $9,000. It was published in Basel by Nicolaus Kesler in 1496 and was the seventh incunable edition of the work. Gregory is credited with founding the medieval papacy and is famous for instigating the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome, the Gregorian Mission, to convert the pagan Anglo-Saxons in England to Christianity. The work was written between 578 and 595. A first trade edition in the first-issue dust jacket edition of Hemingways A Farewell to Arms was estimated at $4,000 to $6,000 and sold for $7,800. It was published in New York by Charles Scribners Sons in 1929. It retained its publishers unclipped ($2.50) dust jacket designed by Cleon with Katharine misspelled on the front flap.Jonahs Gourd Vine by Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) was estimated at $1,000 to 1,500 and sold for $4,320. This rare first edition of Hurstons first novel featured an introduction by Fanny Hurst and was published in Philadelphia by J. B. Lippincott Company in 1934. This sale demonstrated, once again, that the rare book and manuscript market is thriving, and that African-Americana, Fine Bindings, Modern Literature, Photography, and other interests are leading the way, according to Chad Reingold, director of rare books.
