October 27, 2023
Meander Auctions is pleased to announce the Auerbach Auction of Americana and Folk Art on Saturday, Oct. 28, in their new saleroom in Whipple, Ohio. The live auction will include art, furniture, textiles, and more from the collections of father and son, Chuck and Dan Auerbach. Chuck is a fixture on the antiques market and has been selling at shows across the nation for 40 years. His son, Dan, is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the Grammy-award winning blues rock duo The Black Keys. The sale will include over 200 lots, handpicked by Chuck and Dan, that encompass their love of folksy Americana, with an emphasis on the graphic, quirky, one-of-a-kind side, according to Chuck. The senior Auerbach reflected, Ive spent years hunting. Im slowing down, traveling less and would like to pass on some of my finds to like-minded friends. Bidders may bid live, in-person, as well as absentee, by phone, or live online at LiveAuctioneers.com and Hi-Bid.com. Items and descriptions can be viewed using the online catalog, and an in-person preview is available Monday, Oct. 23, to Friday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. daily. I was raised by an antique dealer who was always on the hunt. I was with him at the flea markets at the crack of dawn and out on the back roads on a never ending trail of exciting finds. Needless to say, I caught the bug and have been buying and collecting for years and years, much of it while out on the road with my band. Everything that Ive consigned was handpicked by me, and if I had the room, Id keep it, described Dan of his journey as a collector. Chuck has an amazing eye and can spot the art in just about anything. He loves textiles, especially quilts, and some of those he collected are graphic, but some of his favorites are simple and elegant. He also loves works by self-taught artists. He found the collection of colorful and expressive paintings by Eugene Hill in a shop in Chicago where Hill had been a truck driver. Dan has been a serious collector of rustic antiques for years. Among his contributions to the auction are more than two dozen pieces of rustic furniture, which some also refer to as twig or Adirondack furniture, stated auctioneer Andrew Richmond, who is excited to bring these items to auction. Some of the offerings include a monogrammed and dated 1912 rustic dressing table with mirror, decorated with twigs and roots (est. $500-$1,000); a western Pennsylvania Mennonite quilt, early 20th century, in a simple design, and accented with turkey track stitching (est. $700-$1,200); and a Eugene Hill painting of a ship at sea (or perhaps on the Great Lakes), and display mounted on red plywood (est. $200-$400).
