October 21, 2022
Gehman Auctions of Ephrata Pa., will hold an online-only Antique, Primitive and Collectibles Auction ending on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at www.gehmanauctions.hibid.com. A fresh-to-market large and meticulously rendered collection of mid-late 19th-century wood-carved folk art buildings, animals, and figures ranks among the highlights. This intricate work features multiple structures, including a sizable, well-decorated home with furnishings and a large iconic Pennsylvania barn with removable gable roof and prominent forebank, even an outhouse. There are multiple wagons and buggies including a Reading Dairy wagon. The complete eye catching collection is a wonderful showcase of meticulous, thoughtful and detailed handwork with fully movable and working carts drawn by horses with detailed tack and complicated single and double yokes. Bright and original red and green paint adorn wagons and their harnesses. A closer look reveals that many of these pieces have been produced from cast-off items such as a cheese box, a cigar box lid, repurposed scraps of lace or a small section of an old ruler. There is so much character and life in this large collection of significant folk art carvings. The grouping is a snapshot of local agricultural Pennsylvania life in the mid-late 19th century in a medium that is brimming with the tenacity and make-do, waste not, want not attitude of the southeastern Pennsylvania region. This recently unearthed treasure was purchased by the consignor in the mid-1980s from the Bampton family of Reading and will be offered through Gehman Auctions on the hibid platform. Gehman Auctions ia located at 564 N. Reading Road in Ephrata, Pa. Bidding will be available for the online sale beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19, at www.gehmanauctions.hibid.com.
