June 12, 2026
Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce a 362-lot sale to be held on Saturday, June 20, starting at 11 a.m. (Central Time). This sale features a diverse array of Houdiniana, Victorian magic apparatus, relics from the stages of St. Georges Hall, rare posters, select modern props, and choice ephemera. Material from the emerging field of magicana is very collectible today, and much of this sale has items from the Golden Age of the field. St. Georges Hall is a famous venue in Liverpool, England, known for concerts and theatrical performances since the mid 19th century. The expected top lot in this sale is Harry Houdinis (b. Erik Weisz, 1874-1926) engraved walking stick, which is estimated at $15,000 to $25,000. This black painted wooden cane from around 1910 is decorated with a brass tip and a hallmarked Sterling silver knob engraved To my friend Harry Houdini / From Will Goldston. It is being sold with an RPPC of Houdini seated on a stone bench and holding a cane. The card is inscribed and signed by Houdini to Goldston The jail breaker / Harry Houdini / Dec. 12, 1902 / To my friend Goldston / Merry Xmas / dont look very dangerous! as well as a sepia tone bust portrait of Goldston, with two rubber-stamped Goldston autographs to the verso. Goldston and Houdini were colleagues and friends, collaborating on the publication of Houdinis book Magical Rope Ties and Escapes, and both served as officers in the Magicians Club of London. Adelaide Herrmanns (1853-1932) Adelaide Herrmann and Company. The Flight of the Favorite is estimated at $15,000 to $25,000. This framed one-sheet stone lithograph was printed around 1905 in New York by The Metropolitan Printing Co. It promotes the transposition effect presented in Mme. Herrmanns vaudeville magic show and is illustrated with a Geisha character, two cabinets, and Herrmann standing at the front of the scene. This is one of two examples extant. Another rare poster, Harry Houdinis Harry Houdini. King of Cards, is estimated at $10,000 to $20,000. This half-sheet color lithographed poster is framed and was printed in Chicago by National Printing and Engraving around 1898. It is illustrated with an image of the performer as a young magician at the center, with vignettes depicting his facility with a deck of cards above and below. Karl Germains (1878-1959) Germaine the Wizard is estimated at $10,000 to $20,000. The poster is considered by many collectors to be one of the best magic poster portraits of the golden age. It was printed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1903 by J. Morgan Litho. and illustrated with a full-color portrait of the magician surrounded by fairies, gnomes, pillars, and banners that support his name. A crow silhouetted by the moon perches near the top of the image, lending a hint of mystery. Alexander Herrmanns (1844-96) silk sword is estimated at $8,000 to $12,000. This ca. 1890, specially crafted sword is gimmicked to allow the magician to instantly produce a silk handkerchief at the tip of the blade on command. It features a cast brass handle and a nickel-plated triangular blade. It is being sold with an LOA tracing its ownership and wasdisplayed in Ray Goulets Mini-Museum of Magic in Watertown, Mass., along with several other Herrmann-used and owned props. This is one of only a handful of Herrmanns props still in existence. Perhaps this sale would be more aptly titled masters of magic as the images offered in this auction, many coming to the market for the first time in decades, if not the first time ever. Picture the great magicians of the arts golden age. This is one closely-curated sale we are very excited to conduct, remarked Gabe Fajuri, president at Potter & Potter Auctions.
