GuggenheimSpotlightsZidane

June 19, 2026

Through Sunday, July 19, the Guggenheim New York presents through its Collection in Focus, Zidane, a 21st-Century Portrait (2006), a film centered on French soccer star Zindine Zidane by Douglas Gordon (b. 1966, Glasgow) and Philippe Parreno (b. 1964, Grenoble, France). As the New York metropolitan area hosts soccer matches as part of this years World Cup, the museum welcomes locals and visitors from around the world to experience the global spirit of soccer through an artists lens at one of the citys only UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On view at the Guggenheim for the first time on the 20th anniversary of its creation, the special film captures the global spirit of sport and art. Bringing together art and sport, this special experience offers visitors an opportunity to take part in and celebrate the artistry of one of soccers most iconic players alongside the collective joy that defines the sport on a global stage. Timed to coincide with both the tournament and the 20th anniversary of the work, this is the first time since its acquisition in 2006 that the two-channel video projection will be publicly shown at the Guggenheim. Shown in the Peter B. Lewis Theater, the 90-minute piece will be screened on a continuous loop during one of the most widely shared cultural moments of the summer. Zidane, a 21st-Century Portrait follows the soccer player in real time over the course of a single match, which took place on April 23, 2005, at the Santiago Bernabu Stadium in Madrid, Spain. Assembled from footage shot by 17 synchronized cameras placed throughout the stadium, the film captures Zidane from multiple vantage points, both up close and at a distance, remaining fixed on him even as the central action of the match shifts elsewhere.
