January 13, 2023
Conestoga Auction Gallery, a division of Hess Auction Group, held a two-day Antique and Americana catalog auction on Dec. 2 and 3 in Manheim, Pa. The sale consisted of a total of 785 lots from many consignors and included various categories of items. The first day was artwork and over 100 lots of furniture. The second day ranged from pottery, china, childrens tea sets, and glassware folk art woodenware to include Anri carvings, German kugels, metalware, lightning rods, quilts, and rugs. Highlights included a Christian Eby Chippendale walnut tall case clock and a Jacob Eby Hepplewhite inlaid cherry tall case clock. The Christian Eby clock sold for $10,200 to the Manheim Historical Society. The local historical society also bought a Jacob Eby Sheraton mahogany shelf clock from a Hess auction in June. The Jacob Eby tall case clock sold for $6,250 to a buyer in Ohio. Christian Eby was a clockmaker in Manheim from 1793 until his death in 1803. His younger brother, Jacob, was a clockmaker until 1828. The kugels were an exciting part of the sale, with one selling for $2,500. It was a German red glass Oval B cluster of grapes in excellent condition. The 27 lots of kugels were consigned by one consignor from Delaware. One final lot of note was an Aaron Zook mixed media diorama, which depicted an Amish planting scene, and sold for $6,875. Aaron was the identical twin to Abner. They were born in Lancaster, Pa., and both were well-known artists of large, three-dimensional sculptures. All prices reported include the buyers premium. The next catalog auction will be the single owner collection of the late Darlene Moser scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14, beginning at 9 a.m. For additional information about past or future sales, call 717-664-5238 or visit www.hessauctiongroup.com.
