By Karl Pass - February 17, 2023
Ephrata, Pa., auction house Horst Auctioneers held its first catalog sale of the calendar year on Jan. 13 and 14. The 875-lot multi-consignor sale had 400 lots on day one and the remainder on day two. Horst does not charge a buyers premium. The online bidding platform used is now HiBid. There is a 10-percent buyers premium for online or absentee bidding. Lets get into it. A brass betty lamp together with a minature copper version, both by the late Berks County blacksmith Henry Dietrich, sold for $250. Henry Dietrich (1918-2005), Lenhartsville, Pa., was a farmer and blacksmith. He belonged to the Virginville Grange for over 50 years. His wrought-iron reproductions such as utensils, betty lamps, candlestands, and pie wheels, among other forms, are regionally collected. He worked around the Bicentennial when revivalist arts were popular. Two other metalsmith contemporaries in the area were Tom Loose and Hap Fisher. A ca. 1990 small wooden carved and painted Schimmel-style rooster by Esther Dierwechter of Schaefferstown, Pa., sold for $160. Some good antique country material was in the sale, such as antique cast-iron cookware, English ceramics, woodenware, Amish and Mennonite textiles, and furniture. A Hattie Brunner painting sold for $9,200 and came from the Walter and June Gottshall collection. The late Walter Gottshall was Brunners nephew. They acquired the painting from his father, Luke Gottshall. Luke was Brunners brother-in-law. Brunner (1889-1982), of Reinholds, Pa., was a nationally known antiques dealer and took up folk painting late in life. Her primitive farm scenes are sought after and have a strong regional following. The auction house will have another catalog sale in the spring. The photos are a selection of what else sold. To contact Horst Auctioneers, call 717-738-3080.
