Horst Sells June Gottshall Estate
WJG Goat Folk Art Wood Carving Brings $1,050
By Karl Pass - July 22, 2022
On June 18, Horst Auctioneers in Ephrata, Pa., sold the June Gottshall estate. A member of Swamp Christian Fellowship Church, June passed away at age 100 on April 14, 2021. Her husband, Walter Gottshall, passed away at age 97 on July 1, 2018. Walter was a World War II veteran, Lions Club International member, and Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen member. He was the son of folk artists Luke and Fanny Gottshall and nephew of the famous antiques dealer Hattie Klapp Brunner. Walter was a folk carver for roughly half a century. He carved, and June painted the wooden creations. The Reinholds couple displayed and sold their work at traditional folk art craft shows and were both gifted and loved in the Pennsylvania German folk art community. Gottshalls daughter, folk painter Barbara Strawser of Schaefferstown, Pa., continues the family tradition of Pennsylvania German arts. The 403-lot estate auction grossed $50,703. As expected, Walter and June (often signed WJG) wood carvings were among the stars and sold well. The work is very popular and is witnessing a healthy market at present. Their late son, David Gottshall, was known for reverse painting on glass. Several examples sold well. Various other work such as Foltz and Breininger redware, Stahl pottery, various antiques and much more were sold. This coverage will mostly focus on the WJG carvings. A WJG carving marked Made for June, 1978, of a large lying cat with kittens on an oval board depicting a braided rug, sold for $525. A WJG carousel went for $700; a rooster, $600; a small cat and mouse, $290; and a large whirligig of a farmer brought $475. A WJG carving of a polka dot goat from 1975 sold for $1,050. The inspiration came from an antique polka dot chalkware goat. A David Gottshall (1989) reverse painting of an auction scene sold for $450, and a winter scene with a covered bridge, $350. An early Barbara Strawser spring farm scene painting (17-by-14-inches) sold for $825. The photos show other items sold, mostly Gottshall folk carvings.
