Hotel Stony Run Under New Ownership
Early Deed Brings $5,000 At Onsite Sale
By Karl Pass - October 27, 2023
Chef and owner John Bakay along with co-owner Pat Holzer bought the vacant Hotel Stony Run in the village of Stony Run just south of Kempton in northern Berks County, Pa., in 2020. The 19th-century hotel and bar has had a storied past and has been neglected for several years. While ripping up shag carpet in the attic during what has been a very extensive clean-up and renovation, we found the land deed rolled up in a sort of old floor board hiding space, said Bakay. On Sept. 23, under tents, auctioneer Dean Arner held a sale for Bakay. In spite of a morning of rain and wind from tropical storm remnants, a large crowd from several states converged on the tiny village just above Route 78 north of Kutztown. We had great interest online prior to the sale, mentioned Arner. The onsite sale had several strong results. The material belonged to Bakay, who plans another sale through Arner next year. As for the hotel, we will open sometime in the spring, stated Bakay. The early 19th-century land deed brought $5,000. A folk art Uncle Sam composition toy sold for $1,400, and a Fort Edward, N.Y., stoneware crock with chicken pecking corn decoration realized $1,500. A Fulper Bros. stoneware jug sold for $525; a Return of the Jedi lunch box, $170; and a Lionel train set brought $300. A Marx wind-up motercycle toy went for $320; an Elgin pocket watch, $800; and an unsorted box lot of jewelry sold for $800. Several lots of antique coins sold as well.
