In Memoriam: Nelson Williams (1927-2020)
June 19, 2020
My friend Nelson Markley Williams, 93, of Lafayette Hill, Pa., passed away May 1 due to COVID-19. I first met Nelson in 2008 when we were both working on an exhibition at Ursinus College on Pennsylvania folk art which involved the work of David Ellinger. Nelson wrote what is considered the most significant article on David Ellinger in the Spring 1992 issue of Pennsylvania Folklife. We maintained a friendship in the years following the exhibit, and he will be missed. Nelson was born in Plymouth Township, Pa., on Jan. 27, 1927, the son of the late Daniel C. and the late Charlotte (Markley) Williams. A graduate of Conshohocken High School, Class of 45, he entered the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator in 1945, serving proudly in the Naval Reserve until 1954. He attended The Gibson Institute, Temple University and Penn State and was a member of the National Association of Accountants. After working for Lee Tire and Rubber Co. early in his career, Nelson joined the staff of Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., in 1965 and retired in 1989 as vice president of Business Affairs. He served on the advisory board of the Berman Museum at Ursinus as well as the board of the Community Music School in Trappe, Pa. His advice, wisdom and dedication were always appreciated. He was a 32 Master Mason and Past Master of Charity Lodge #190 F&AM of Norristown. An active member of the First Baptist Church of Norristown, Nelson earned the respect of the congregation and cared deeply for the well-being of his fellow congregants. An art enthusiast and collector of folk art, Nelson researched local artists, especially the late David Ellinger. Nelson enjoyed traveling and joined friends on many trips to Europe, where he was able to pursue interests in British history and researching family roots in England. As the last surviving of ten children, Nelson was the anchor of his family and respected and admired by everyone who knew him. He is survived by nieces Juanita Lilick of Bridgeport, Pa.; Judith Musselman of Watertown, N.Y.; Charlotte Novak of Boynton Beach, Fla.; Cynthia Hilghman of Lantana, Fla.; and Beverly Culp of Norristown, Pa.; and nephews Roger Williams of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Winfield Culp of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., in addition to many great nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to: the Employee Appreciation Fund of the Masonic Village, 801 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, Pa. 19444.
