Historic Rock Ford welcomes Justin Cherry, owner of Half Crown Bakehouse, for two Labor Day events on Monday, Sept. 7. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Cherry will be demonstrating making the bread of the American Revolution in a custom-built 6,000-pound mobile clay oven. In addition to these baking demonstrations, the General Edward Hand Mansion and the John J. Snyder, Jr. Gallery will be open for self-guided tours. The cost for the daytime event is $12 per person. Then, at 6 p.m., Cherry will present a lecture on The Bakers of Washingtons Army during the American Revolution. This presentation will be held on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Admission for the lecture is $10 per person. Justin Cherry is a professional chef, historical baker, and the owner of Half Crown Bakehouse, a mobile operation based in Charleston, S.C. A lifelong living history enthusiast, Cherry combined his culinary expertise with a passion for 18th-century foodways to revive traditional baking methods using heritage and landrace grains. In 2019, his dedication to historical accuracy earned him a research fellowship at George Washingtons Mount Vernon, where he now serves as the Resident Baker. He is notably the first American to become a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in London, one of the citys oldest livery companies. Cherry educates the public by recreating period-correct breads and dishes at historic sites and re-enactments. He is a Fellow of the Presidential Library of George Washington at Mount Vernon, The Society of Cincinnati and The American Philosophical Society.
