Listen With Your Eyes: A Moe Brooker Retrospective

By Karl Pass - August 21, 2026

Woodmere is proud to present Listen With Your Eyes: A Moe Brooker Retrospective, the first retrospective dedicated to the work of Moe Brooker (1940-2022), one of Philadelphias most beloved and visionary artists. On view from Saturday, Sept. 26, through Jan. 17, 2027, the exhibition offers the most comprehensive exploration of Brookers remarkable artistic legacy to date. Listen With Your Eyes traces the full arc of Brookers career, beginning with his academic realist paintings of the 1960s and focusing on the multi-decade evolution of his much-celebrated vibrant abstractions. His luminous canvases, distinguished by radiant patchworks of color animated by sweeping calligraphic gestures, reflect a lifelong pursuit of rhythm, movement, and spiritual expression. Throughout his career, Brooker drew inspiration from an exceptionally rich range of sources, such as the structure and tonalities of both gospel and jazz music, the bright lights and graffiti of the Philadelphia cityscape, African and African American weavings and quilts, and art-historical touchstones from late medieval Italian painting to Wassily Kandinsky and Arthur B. Carles. The exhibition reveals how these diverse sources of inspiration coalesced into a body of work that is deeply personal, intellectually expansive, and unmistakably original. In addition to paintings, Listen With Your Eyes features a selection of Brookers wall-mounted and freestanding sculptures, weavings, sketchbooks, and personal ephemera. Together, these rarely seen works offer visitors an intimate window into the artists creative process and the breadth of his practice. As the first retrospective devoted to Brookers career, Listen With Your Eyes celebrates the enduring impact of an artist whose work continues to resonate across generations and whose contributions have helped define Philadelphias artistic identity. It has been a true privilege to work closely with Moe Brookers family in bringing this retrospective to life. Their generosity in sharing their knowledge, memories, and personal archives has made it possible to present a deeply personal portrait of Moe, not only as a remarkable artist, but also as a teacher, mentor, and beloved member of the Philadelphia community, states William R. Valerio, Ph.D., The Patricia Van Burgh CEO and director, Woodmere. We hope Listen With Your Eyes offers visitors a meaningful opportunity to experience the extraordinary breadth of his artistic vision and to celebrate the enduring legacy he leaves behind. Nestled in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Woodmere offers a unique museum experience that centers on the art and artists of Philadelphia.
