Megatron Leads Strong Results High-Grade Rarities Drive $187,423 Total For Action Figure And Toy Sale

April 17, 2026

Heritage Auctions March 15 Action Figures and Toys Showcase Extended Bidding Auction delivered $187,423 in total sales, with record prices for Voltron figures and the Insecticon Kickback underscoring continued collector demand for high-grade, encapsulated examples from the formative years of 1980s toy production. Anchored by standout results from Hasbros Generation 1 Transformers line and Matchboxs Voltron series, the auction highlighted the importance of condition, scarcity and early production variations in todays market. Leading the event was a Transformers Generation 1 Megatron in his alternate Walther P-38 mode (Hasbro, 1984), which realized $50,000. As the defining Decepticon leader introduced at the launch of the Transformers line, Megatron remains central to the franchises identity across toys, animation and comics. This example, distinguished by its trademark logo associated with rubsign-era packaging, reflects a later production run within the original assortment. With a population of just seven at this grade and a strong Figure subgrade of 90, the piece represents a condition-driven benchmark for collectors focused on early Generation 1 material. Collectors continue to place a premium on condition, rarity and verifiable population data, particularly for cornerstone releases from the early years of Transformers and Voltron, remarked Justin Caravoulias, Heritage Auctions Action Figures and Toys consignment director. This auction demonstrated that high-grade, encapsulated examples, especially those with strong subgrades or low population counts, are driving the market and setting new benchmarks for vintage toys from the 1980s. Four Voltron lots and an Insecticon Transformer reached all-time-high prices in the sale. A Voltron II Deluxe Gladiator Set (Matchbox, 1984) achieved a record $4,250. Representing the complete configuration of the Voltron II line, the set unites all three Miniature Gladiator Robots into a single presentation designed to form the combined Massive Voltron II. With only three examples recorded at this grade and just two graded higher, the set stands as a high-grade representation of a key early Voltron release. Transformers Insecticons continued to demonstrate the appeal of high-grade, encapsulated examples. A Generation 1 Insecticon Kickback (Hasbro, 1985), representing the highest graded tier for the character, with no higher examples documented, realized a high-water mark of $3,875. Fellow Generation 1 Insecticon Shrapnel (Hasbro, 1985) similarly belongs to a population of one at its grade with no higher-graded examples recorded. It brought $3,375. Rounding out the top results was a Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones figure (Kenner, 1982), which realized $3,000. Produced as part of one of Kenners shortest-lived licensed action figure lines, the series has become difficult to locate in high-grade condition. This example ranks as the third-highest graded specimen and reflects strong preservation across card, bubble and figure, notable attributes given the lines known susceptibility to wear.
