Mid-Century Travel Posters Take Off Strong Market For Original Vintage Posters

April 25, 2025

Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of a 629-lot vintage poster sale held on March 20. All prices noted include the auction houses buyers premium. The top lot in this sale was David Kleins (19182005) New York / TWA. Selling for $9,000, this linen backed, ca. 1960 classic original poster depicted Times Square in glittering abstract shapes. This poster was first issued in 1956 with a TWA Constellation at the top. A few years later, the poster was issued with the silhouette of a jet, as seen in this example. Other noteworthy highlights were Las Vegas / Fly TWA, realizing $5,040. Also designed by Klein, this ca. 1960s, linen backed travel poster was illustrated with a split-image design depicting Las Vegas by day and night. Richters Anker Steinbaukasten traded hands at $2,640. Printed in Vienna by J. Weiner in the 1880s, the linen backed, color lithograph poster advertised the building sets, which in the late 19th century and early 20th century, were the most popular toy construction sets in the world. It was illustrated with a boy assembling a church from blocks in three colors. John B.L. Goodwins (1912-1994) Saba / Netherlands Antilles soared to $2,640. This ca. 1960s example was printed in the U.S. and illustrated a distant view of the Caribbean island and its volcano, Mount Scenery. Stan Gallis (1912-2009) United Air Lines / Disneyland sold well at $3,840. This linen backed example was from the 1950s and illustrated with a ferry full of families riding through Disneylands Jungle Cruise attraction with Sleeping Beautys castle visible in the distance. This auction offered posters from a large cross-section of categories, and we were happy to see a strong response across the board, spirited bidding on the top lots, and a high sell-through rate, said Joe Slabaugh, director of cataloging for Potter & Potter Auctions.
