One Bowl More The History Of Colonial American Drinks Set For June 12
By Karl Pass - April 10, 2026
One bowl more and then was a common phrase in early America that reflected the consumption of alcohol. Where did all of these beverages come from? On Friday, June 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Heishmans Mill in Carlisle, Pa., Tony Shahan will present a history of Colonial American beverages. Shahan of TC Historical Consulting and Flavors of History will talk about the type of stills that existed at the mill and the local grains used. His experience brewing beer in an 18th-century farmhouse, an 1803 brewery, and an 1850 German brewery will be discussed, as well as his experience working in George Washingtons Distillery at Mount Vernon. Through documentary research and hands-on experience, discover the equipment and techniques used for brewing and distilling in early America. This will be paired with a tasting sample of five of the nations founders favorite 18th-century beverages. This program also includes light complimentary refreshments. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at www.friendsofheishmansmill.org. Preregistration is required, and it is an age 21-plus event. During his 38 years working in museums, Shahan has worked to ensure that the stories of our shared past remain alive and accessible. He also developed a passion for historic food and beverage. He mostly works with 17th- and 18th-century receipts (todays recipes) but has recreated beverages and dishes from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, Medieval Europe, and the 19th century. His specialty has become fundraising dinners featuring historic food and drinks. Heishmans Mill is located at 1206 Creek Road in Carlisle, Pa.
