Point-to-Point Returns On May 30
Still A Spring Tradition, A Smaller Event For 2021 Is Planned To Protect The Health Of Attendees
May 14, 2021
The annual Point-to-Point steeplechase race at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, the Brandywine Valleys signature springtime tradition since 1979, returns to its roots on Sunday, May 30, as a day of picnicking and steeplechase racing action for 3,600 attendees. We worked diligently to create a plan for a fun and, most importantly, safe event for attendees, said Carol B. Cadou, the Charles F. Montgomery director and CEO of Winterthur. We know how much everyone enjoys Point-to-Point, and we truly wish we could welcome all this year, but since the start of the pandemic, Winterthurs number one priority has been doing our part to protect the health and safety of the community. Attendance has been reduced to comply with state regulations for Covid-19. Holders of lifetime rights had until April 15 to purchase their spaces. Remaining spaces were offered to the general public on April 16. A small number of exclusive tailgate tents are available for purchase by the general public. To learn more, call 302-888-4994 or email point-to-point@winterthur.org. All attendees are required to bring masks and to wear them wherever a safe physical distance of six feet from others cannot be maintained. Point-to-Point this year will focus on the National Steeplechase Association-sanctioned racing action. Small, safe gatherings of spectators are permitted. Organizers hope to bring back traditions such as the carriage parade, classic car show, marketplace, and stick races for children as part of a full-scale Point-to-Point in 2022. It has been a difficult couple of years for the event. In 2020, it was cancelled due to Covid-19. The year prior, the event was held, but racing was cancelled due to unsafe conditions on the track caused by heavy rainfall. Point-to-Point is Winterthurs largest single-day fundraising event. Proceeds support the preservation of the estate and gardens as well as Winterthurs educational programs. Since the first event, on May 6, 1979, Point-to-Point has grown from a small gathering of riders and picnickers into a high-stakes race that is highly anticipated by thousands for the racing, the fashion, and for the high-spirited fun. We thank the devoted attendees of Point-to-Point and the National Steeplechase Association for their loyalty and support, said Cadou. We will see everyone in 2022, when we can all gather safely once again. Winterthur, located on Route 52, is six miles northwest of Wilmington, Del., and five miles south of U.S. Route 1.
