Swann Galleries will offer important signed photographs from a California collection on Thursday, May 7. The sale features a remarkable selection of early cabinet cards, portraits, and candid photographs signed by influential figures across politics, science, religion, pop culture and more. American presidential autographs include two signed portraits of Abraham Lincoln, one vignetted carte-de-visite by James Gardner (est. $100,000 to $150,000), and a signed albumen print from 1861 portraying one of the most reproduced images of the 16th president (est. $80,000 to $120,000). Notably, a signed and inscribed photograph of John Wilkes Booth is also present (est. $7,000 to $10,000). A ca. 1960 candid photograph of John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower, signed by both men, will be offered (est. $20,000 to $30,000), as well as a large photograph by George Prince showing Theodore Roosevelt and the nine members of his 1906 cabinet, signed by each (est. $15,000 to $25,000), and a group of four photograph of the Paris Peace Conference ending WWI signed by the important attendees, including Woodrow Wilson (est. $15,000 to $25,000). First ladies are also present with Edith Kermit Roosevelt (est. $3,000 to $4,000), Julia D. Grant (est. $3,000 to $4,000), and Lucretia Garfield (est. $2,000 to $3,000). Further American figures include an exceedingly uncommon photograph of frontiersman Kit Carson (est. $35,000 to $50,000); General William Tecumseh Sherman with an attractive carte-de-visite showing a bust portrait by Matthew Brady signed by Sherman on Bradys original mount in astonishingly good condition (est. $12,000 to $18,000); Martin Luther King, Jr., who signed and inscribed a striking portrait of himself in profile (est. $6,000 to $9,000); Thomas Edison, a photograph signed and inscribed, The electric vehiclewill become more common than the horse, to electric car manufacturer Day Baker (est. $15,000 to $20,000). Babe Ruth, Wilbur and Orville Wright, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller and Susan B. Anthony are also represented in the sale. Rounding out the collection are two photographs of Albert Einstein signed and inscribed in the year Hitler became chancellor and Einsteins move to the U.S. (est. $10,000 to $20,000); a 1998 photograph of Nelson Mandela (est. $600 to $900); a signed cabinet card of Leo Tolstoy (est. $7,000 to $10,000); and a signed cabinet card of Charles Dickens (est. $7,000 to $10,000).
