Samuel Slaymaker Retires As Executive Director Of Historic Rock Ford

After nearly 20 years of service, Historic Rock Ford announced the retirement of Samuel C. Slaymaker as its executive director. Since the beginning of his tenure in 2005, Slaymaker led the way in creating new and innovative programming that allowed visitors to connect with the life and times of Gen. Edward Hand. This programming included his adaptations of Sleepy Hollow: The Legend Comes to Rock Ford, Emma, The Matchmaker, and Persuasion, as well as Tales from the Caretakers, which explored over two centuries of haunted tales connected with Rock Ford. Slaymaker also oversaw the multi-year capital campaign to design, build and open Historic Rock Fords John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster Decorative Arts in 2021. He has also worked closely with the Collections Committee and Rock Ford curator Sarah Alberico to continue to improve the furnishings and interpretation of Rock Fords rooms so that they may more authentically represent their appearance during the time of the Hand Family residency. Sam has been a cornerstone of our organization, guiding us through numerousachievements and challenges with unwavering commitment and vision, states Dana Lewis, president of the Board of Trustees of the Rock Ford Foundation. His leadership has profoundly shaped Historic Rock Ford, and his impact will be felt for years to come. Slaymaker has been granted the honorary title of director emeritus by the Board of Trustees. In this new capacity, he will continue to be a valuedsource of wisdom and support, offering his insights and guidance as needed, according to Lewis. After a nationwide search, Historic Rock Ford is likewise delighted to announce the appointment of Christina H. McSherry, Ph.D. as its new executive director. Dr. McSherry brings a unique blend of expertise in historical archaeology and anthropology, paired with a deep commitment to community engagement and education. She currently is the adjutant assistant professor of anthropology at Franklin & Marshall College. Her passion for Historic Rock Ford is already evident through her extensive involvement with the site as she currently serves as the chair of the Historic Dance Committee, is actively engaged with Lafayette 2025, and works as a weekend supervisor and tour guide. Dr. McSherrys diverse experience has equipped her with exceptional leadership skills, enabling her to effectively engage with various communities, drive successful initiatives, and foster meaningful partnerships, explains Lewis. Her passion for history and dedication to excellence make her an ideal fit to advance our mission.
