The George Miller IV Auction Co. held a multi-consignor sale at Beltzner Hall in Kutztown, Pa., on Oct. 23. The star of the auction was a wooden carved and painted bird on a stand attributed to Schtockschnitzler Simmons. The itinerant carver referred to as Simmons is known to have spent time in the Moselem Springs area of Berks County in the late 19th and early 20th century. The forename of Schtockschnitzler loosely translates to old man cane carver. He carved canes, birds on stands, and bird trees, and the work is highly valued today. Due in large part to Dick and Rosemarie Machmers 1991 book Just For Nice and the exhibit which followed suit, the recognition for Simmons work heightened. The carvers active dates are considered ca. 1885-1910. The dark green and red painted parrot-like bird sold was considered fresh-to-the-market and realized $23,100, selling to Berks County private collectors. Other highlights of the sale included a pair of 1960s diamond back chairs by Harry Bertoia selling for $935. Prices reported include a 10-percent buyers premium. A set of four Harry Bertoia wire chairs brought $528. A Fender amp from the 1970s went for $1,430; an 1878 20D gold piece, $1,980; a 1909 5D gold piece, $550; and an 1890 20D Liberty head gold piece sold for $1,870. To learn more, call 610-944-0926.
