Step Into A Unique World Of Modern Textiles
July 03, 2026
The Muskegon Museum of Art is excited to announce Material World: Ten Women, which recently opened and will run through Sunday, Aug. 23. This invitational exhibition features present-day women artists working with nontraditional materials or using traditional materials in nontraditional ways. The exhibition highlights the use of the physical characteristics of material and technique as a component of both visual and conceptual themes. Many works utilize found objects common to everyday households or bring elements from nature to inside spaces. Painting, sculpting, weaving, and assemblage merge in unexpected ways throughout the exhibition. Crocheted metal wire transforms into complex organic shapes, steel rods are welded into animals and traditional vessels, paintings are cut apart and reassembled on looms, and birch bark becomes quilt-like in complex geometric arrangements, amidst other unique approaches that will surprise. The Muskegon Museum of Art has a strong commitment to championing womens contributions to the arts, and this exhibition is another great example of just that. We cant wait for you to see the unique and impressive works these artists have created, explained Megan DeWitt, Muskegon Museum of Arts director of marketing.
