Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of a 668-lot sale held on Sept. 3. All prices noted include a 20 percent buyers premium. The top lot was an Old King Cole roughneck cigar display figure. Estimated at $500 to $1,000, it delivered a whopping $7,800. This large hanging, papier-mache figure wearing a green cap and smoking a cigar was produced in Canton, Ohio, by Old King Cole Inc. in the 1930s. It had moving jaws and eyes and retained its makers paper label on verso. A collection of 20 albums of vernacular circus photographs was estimated at $2,500 to $5,000 and made $5,500. These were taken by Chicago photographer Frank R. Parker in the 1940s to 60s. The collection included 20 snapshot and photograph albums, with hundreds of unpublished vernacular images documenting the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus over an approximately 15-year span. These images included an array of candid and back lot images of circus performers; wagons; animals; posters and signage; equipment; and workers, including stars such as Emmett Kelly, Felix Adler, Cecil B. DeMille, Antoinette Concello, Harold Alzana, Merle Evans, and more. A Humpty Dumpty animatronic figure, estimated at $900 to $1,300, traded hands at $4,320. This mid-20th century papier-mache egg shaped figure measured 44 by 40 by 13 inches and was mounted to a painted plywood base. It was detailed with fabric clothing and a matching hat. When activated, the figure teetered about, and its eyes, eyebrows, and mouth changed expression in tandem. The figure was marked Cook, Philadelphia in yellow lettering on the base. A linen backed, color stone lithograph poster advertising various acts at the Folies Bergere was estimated at $300 to $500 and delivered $3,840. It was produced in Paris in 1873-74 by Imp. Bertauts. Hercules Robinsons The Zulu Spy: being an authentic history of the genuine Zulus; their life and adventures in Zululand was estimated at $400 to $600 and realized $2,640. Its subtitle included the wording the principal attraction in the Museum of the P.T. Barnum & London united shows. This illustrated 10-by-6.75-inch publication was produced in New York by the Popular Pub. Co. in 1881. It retained its original hand-colored pulp wrappers. According to Potter & Potters experts, this scarce book is only the second copy we have seen. Results in this sale were strong across the board, including circus posters, photography, and memorabilia. In particular, the strong resultson the Old King Cole display figures show that these animated advertisements continueto excite bidders.
