By Karl Pass - August 14, 2026
A scarce paint-decorated small lift-top box realized $37,600 at Laughlin Auctions Inc. on July 22. Established in 1986, Laughlin is in Edinburg, Va., between Winchester and Harrisonburg off Route 81. Measuring 10.25 inches wide and 7.25 inches high, the chest with original decoration on blue ground has yellow and black sunburst decoration and alternating concentric stippled dot pattern center, matching end boards with eight-point star and stippled frame decoration, and lid with consistent decoration and semicircle corner pattern. Made of yellow pine with dovetailed construction and center divider board, it rests on tall turned feet and has replaced leather strap hinges. Attributed to family members Jacob Stirewalt (1805-1869) and John N. Stirewalt (1802-1836), the chest belongs to a group of similar paint-decorated boxes likely from New Market, Va. The Stirewalt family spent time in both New Market, Va., and Rowan County, N.C. These small lift-top boxes and chests are highly priced Southern folk art. For more information, call 540-984-8080.
