Summer Sporting Art And Decoy Auction Hits $4 Million
Guyette & Deeter Held Two-Day Sale Aug. 21 And 22
September 11, 2020
Spirited bidding pushed Guyette & Deeters Summer auction to the $4,000,000 mark on Aug. 21 and 22. This was the second auction conducted exclusively by phone, absentee and online bidding for the antique decoy and sporting art specialty auction company based in St. Michaels, Md. Collectors continue to feel comfortable bidding even if they have not viewed the items in person because the company guarantees condition reports. Many companies sell items as is. Eight decoys sold for over $100,000, and 56 sold for over $10,000. Seven of the $100,000-plus decoys came from the estate of decoy collector Dr. Lloyd T. Griffith of Mt. Holly, Va. The top lot was a well preserved, 140-year-old Canada goose made by Nathan Cobb Jr. (Cobbs Island, Va.). It realized $336,000. The decoy was formerly owned by William Mackey Jr., and Dr. Griffith bought it for $2,600 in the early 1970s. Shorebird decoys accounted for the remaining top lots. A Nathan Cobb Jr. curlew sold for $210,000. A William Bowman curlew sold for $168,000, a Luther Nottingham curlew for $168,000 (a world record for the maker), and an Obediah Verity feeding plover realized $156,000. Guyette & Deeters next sale will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21, in Easton, Md. To learn more, visit www.guyetteanddeeter.com.
