Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of a 347-lot sale held on April 26. The event had a 97-percent sell-through rate. Prices reported include the auction houses 20-percent buyers premium. This specialty sale featured a full spectrum of materials, apparatus, and ephemera celebrating the legendary and timeless magician, Harry Houdini (Hungarian/American, born Erik Weisz, 1874-1926). The top lot was Houdinis traveling trunk, which was estimated at $20,000-$40,000 and delivered $57,600. This theatrical trunk was manufactured in the 1910s and was used to transport the performers props and apparatus. It was detailed with riveted metal edges and lettered on the exterior of its lid in white with the name Houdini in block capitals. This is only a handful of trunks to survive the nearly 100 years since Houdinis death. A four-page, signed and autographed letter from Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) regarding Houdini and his escapes sold for $18,000. This correspondence from around 1926 from the author and creator of Sherlock Holmes to an unknown recipient contained Doyles extensive thoughts regarding Houdinis abilities and passing. Frank Vizetellys A Desk-Book of 25,000 Words Frequently Mispronounced sold for $15,600. It was published in New York and London by Funk & Wagnalls Company in 1917 and was the first reference book to contain Houdinis name. This was Houdinis personal copy; it also included the autographed bookplate of Beatrice Houdini on its front pastedown. It was inscribed and signed on the flyleaf by the master magician: Given to me by my sister Gladys for Christmas 1918 / H Houdini. A pair of Houdini chain cuffs from 1915 broke free at $14,400. This restraint device was patented by George Alvin Wood in 1913. These cuffs were in a wooden shadowbox display featuring a picture of Houdini and a signed COA from Henry Mueller and Sidney Radner of the Houdini Magical Hall of Fame/Houdini-Hardeen Collection. A Houdini-owned packing box challenge broadside realized $10,200. It was published in Swansea by the South Wales Post Newspaper Co. in 1911. This half-sheet poster described the escape from a packing box Houdini would make on stage at the Swansea Empire on May 5, 1911. It was framed and included a COA signed by Sidney Radner. All of the truly rare and unique material offered in this auction (and a few items that fit neither of those descriptions) outperformed expectations. We cant wait for our next offering of Houdinianalater in 2025, remarked Gabe Fajuri, president at Potter & Potter Auctions. To learn more, visit www.potterauctions.com.
