Two-Day Americana And Country Store Advertising Auction Conestoga Auction Company To Hold Large Sale On Jan. 9 And 10
By Karl Pass - December 26, 2025
On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9 and 10, Conestoga Auction, a division of Hess Auction Group, will hold a two-day Americana and Country Store Advertising Auction. There will be more than 1,100 lots from multiple consignors during the two days, including general store advertising and displays, brewery signs, veterinary advertising cabinets, quilts, coverlets, painted primitives and Americana. Among the notable consignments include items from the late Dean Getz collection of Wrightsville, Pa., and the late James Hoffman collection of Mount Joy, Pa. Among the expected highlights will be a rare Fox Head Lager Beer illuminated bar halo sign. The ca. 1930-40 illuminated sign, with Price Brothers makers label on reverse, retains strong colors. Another lot deserving mention is a documented conestoga wagon box. Discovered in the 1960s by author and collector George Shumway, along with the rest of the wagon in a barn located in Dover, Pa., the wagon and box were pictured in his book Conestoga Wagon 1750-1850 published in 1968. The particular wagon, called the Quickel Wagon, refers to the area where it was found. Michael Quickel and his wife, Barbara, were early settlers who sold the land upon which an Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1770. The log church was named Quickel Evangelical Lutheran Church. Later, a brick church was built, which still stands. The toolbox was sold by Raccoon Creek Antiques to collector Ed Reiner. Upon his passing, it was purchased by the present consignor. The hardware showcases the artistry of the blacksmiths work. A pair of wrought iron hearts flank the center hasp, acting as embellishment to the lid. Wrought iron bands and rosehead nails provide both decoration and support to the box. A Prussian blue paint covers earlier coats of paint. Copies of the book and other documentation are included. Very collectible today, especially for country kitchens and open hearths, are early shaved oak hearth brooms. A choice period example is in this sale with long shaped oak handle (some age splits) with shaved broom head and twisted oak shavings to keep it tied together. Online bidding will be through both Live Auctioneers and HiBid. The live auction will be held at the Conestoga Auction Gallery at 768 Graystone Road, Manheim, Pa. Fridays session will begin at 9 a.m., and Saturdays will start at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast will be provided by Hess Auction Group, on Saturday only, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Food will be available for purchase both days.
