Potter & Potter Auctions Jan. 29 poster sale was a wall to wall success, delivering extraordinary results from start to finish. The 1930s-era color lithograph was published in Paris, signed by the designer Raoul Ortez, and featured the clown Charlie Cairoli as a young performer with his father, Jean-Marie Cairoli, on the violin, and Porto. Paul George Lawlers Peru of the Incas / Pan American was estimated at $1,200-1,800 and made $2,640. This airline destination poster from 1938 depicted men looking up at a Pan Am Douglas DC-3 flying over the Andes. Air Djibouti / La Mer Rouge, estimated at $250-$350, traded hands at $1,920. This 1960s-era silkscreen poster for the African carrier now known as Red Sea Airlines was printed in Paris and was illustrated with an abstract fish and boat on a blue background. This sale again confirmed Potter & Potter Auctions well-deserved reputation as the leader in selling posters featuring India and Indian themed celebrations, culture, and attractions. India for Big Game / Air India for Service was estimated at $800-$1,200 and sold for $6,000. This 1960s era airline poster was printed in Bombay by Bombay Fine Art Offset & Litho Works and was illustrated with a close-up of a lions face and Air Indias Maharajah mascot. Air India / Rome was estimated at $800-$1,200 and sold for $2,200. This offset lithograph airline poster depicted the airlines Maharajah mascot playing a pungi, charming his bowl of pasta into spelling out the word Rome. It was published in 1971 by the New Jack Printing Works in Bombay. India In War and Peace, estimated at $800-$1,200, delivered $2,000. This abundantly illustrated pictorial map of India called out its natural resources, minerals, agricultural output, cities, and people. It was published in Leeds by Alf. Cooke Ltd., ca. 1951. Posters featuring American travel destinations also caught the eye of bidders worldwide. Charles Allens 1960s era Hawaii was estimated at $1,000-$1,500 and landed at $3,360. This offset, linen backed lithograph travel poster featured surfers catching a huge ocean wave. Joseph Fehers (1908-87) Hawaii / United Airlines, estimated at $800-$1,200, realized $2,640. This midcentury poster was decorated with a Hawaiian hostess holding a lei, people playing on a beach in the background, and a United Boeing Stratocruiser in the air. Posters promoting consumer brands, products, and services were well represented in this auction. Otto Obermeiers (1883-1958) Bock-Bier / aus der aktienbrauerei zum / Lowenbrau in Munchen more than doubled its high estimate to realize $2,640. This turn of last century work was printed in Munich by G. Schuh & Cie and was playfully illustrated with a goat playing a flute and carrying a family on its back, the father holding a glass of beer, in front of a full moon. Winning Technologies from Intel was estimated at $100-$200 and soared to $2,160. It provided a fishing guide to the USA, plus parts of Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, and was designed to be displayed in bait and tackle shops. Pan Ams Supersonic Clipper / in the skies of tomorrow was estimated at $1,000-$2,000 and reached $4,320. This unusual, 1960s era poster featured an image of the supersonic jet engineered to fly between New York and London in roughly two and half hours and is believed to be the only poster Pan Am issued to promote its Concorde venture. This sale came full circle with posters promoting political movements, propaganda initiatives, and other topics that bridged or defied traditional auction categories. A.M. Cassandres (1901-68) Normandie, estimated at $300-$500, sold for $2,640. This large lithograph reprint, by Cassandres estate, was illustrated with an oversized cruise vessel and was produced after his 1935 original. The success of the sale was driven in large part by many, many bids. When the final hammer fell at about 8:15 p.m., we not only beat our high estimate, but set a few records in the process. This was due in large part to strong bidder response to both familiar and new subject areas and designers, exceeding expectations and, as a result, taking two or three times as long to sell as usual, thereby doubling or tripling, or more, our estimated prices, according to Joe Slabaugh of Potter & Potter.
