Potter & Potter Auctions recently announced the results of a 580-lot vintage poster specialty sale held on March 26. Prices noted include the auction houses 20 percent buyers premium. The highest grossing lot was Alphonse Muchas (1860-1939) Job which delivered $5,040. It was published in Paris in 1898 by F. Champenois. This classic, linen backed Art Nouveau advertising poster was illustrated with an attractive woman with a cigarette rolled with Job papers. The word Job was boldly printed across the top. Leonetto Cappiellos (1875-1942) Veuve Amiot / Cremant du Roi sold for $4,320. This framed, linen backed, color lithograph was printed in 1922 in Paris by Devambez. It advertised the sparkling wine of kings, and was illustrated with a royal figure shown giving the sign of perfection. The vintage poster for Elsbar-Brau / Schneider Brive served up $3,120. The early 20th-century color lithographed cardstock point-of-purchase beverage poster was illustrated with a polar bear holding a tray with a frothy mug of beer and was printed in Lyon-Paris by A. Ramboz. A Grateful Dead Skeleton and Roses Avalon Ballroom concert poster sold for 1,800. It was a third printing of the classic design by Mouse and Kelley. Another newsworthy lot was the Hong Kong / Qantas airline poster selling for $1,625. The ca. 1970s era linen backed advertising poster was illustrated with the profile of a dragon. It was from a series of Qantas posters with images created using aboriginal bark painting techniques. The results of this auction demonstrated a strong appetite for quality vintage posters. We were glad to once again be able to put together a sale with high points in several collecting areas, noted Joe Slabaugh, director of cataloging. To learn more, visit www.potterauctions.com.
